Bad Weather in the Seychelles: What to Do on a Rainy Day on Mahé

Rain on Mahé does not have to spoil your day. Here are our favourite ideas for bad weather in the Seychelles, from waterfalls to Victoria and local art.

Even in paradise the sky sometimes turns grey. Are you stuck in your hotel or guesthouse because of unexpected rain? Has an outdoor plan been cancelled because of the weather? Do not worry. Bad weather in the Seychelles is rarely a reason to sit in the hotel lobby. On Mahé there is plenty to discover on a rainy day, and we are happy to help you make the most of it.

Tropical showers on our island are often short and the weather can change quickly. With a little flexibility, a cloudy day can become one of the most memorable of your holiday.

Waterfalls: at their best after the rain

Rain has one big advantage: the waterfalls of Mahé are full and powerful. A waterfall visit is one of our favourite ideas for bad weather in the Seychelles. The forest smells fresh, the colours are deep green and everything feels alive.

  • Sauzier Waterfall near Port Glaud on the west coast, reached by a short walk through the forest (small entrance fee payable on site).
  • The waterfall at Grand Anse on the west coast, with a natural pool surrounded by granite and green.

Wear shoes with a good grip, as rocks and paths can be slippery when wet. Your guide knows the safe spots and the best moments for a photo.

Victoria: markets, museums and gardens

Our small capital is perfect for a day with changing weather. On a Victoria City Tour you can explore the colourful market, the little streets around the Clock Tower and the Hindu temple, and step inside when a shower passes. The National History Museum and the Natural History Museum are good indoor options, and the Botanical Garden looks especially lush after rain.

Tea, rum and spices

A private Mahé Island Tour can easily be planned around the weather. Several stops are partly under a roof and fun in any conditions:

  • Tea Factory: learn how Seychelles tea is produced and enjoy a cup with a view over the hills.
  • Takamaka Rum Distillery: a tour of the historic estate, with a rum tasting if you like.
  • Jardin du Roi: the spice garden above Anse Royale, where cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg smell even stronger in the humid air.

Because our tours are private, your guide can change the order of stops at short notice and follow the sunshine around the island.

A submarine trip

Looking for something really different? A submarine excursion lets you see the underwater world, the corals and colourful fish, whatever the sky is doing above. We are happy to recommend a provider.

A sun printing workshop

Get creative on our Soul Flower Tour: a sun printing workshop where you print your own pareo with sunlight and flowers. A hands on artistic experience for all ages, and you take home your own piece of Seychelles art.

Arts and crafts

Discover the creative side of the island. Mahé has many talented local artists, and visiting studios and galleries is a wonderful way to spend a cloudy afternoon. Your guide can include local art stops in your tour.

Our tips for bad weather on Mahé

  • Pack a light rain jacket or a small umbrella. It stays warm, so you will not get cold.
  • Wear shoes with a good grip for waterfalls and forest paths.
  • Stay flexible. A cloudy morning often turns into a bright afternoon.
  • Talk to us. If the weather changes your plans, we will find a good alternative with you. Would you like more time? You can simply add extra hours when you book, and if the day runs a little longer, that is no problem.
