Some moments on holiday stay with you forever. A sunset on Mahé is one of them: the light turns soft and golden, the granite rocks glow, and the sun slowly sinks into the Indian Ocean. In this guide we tell you where and when to watch the sunset on Mahé, what makes the evening light here so special and how to plan a relaxed, romantic evening with a local guide.
Why a sunset on Mahé is so special
Mahé covers 157.3 km², and its granite backbone rises to 905 metres at the Morne Seychellois before dropping straight into the sea. This landscape gives our evenings their character. While the dark, forested ridges turn into silhouettes, the open horizon to the west welcomes the setting sun. Along the way to the viewpoint your guide helps you read this landscape: wooded ridges, quiet bays and granite boulders polished by the sea spray.
The golden hour close to the equator
At our latitude, just south of the equator, day turns into night quickly. The famous golden hour is more like a golden half hour here, so every minute counts. That is why we plan the timing around the exact sunset of the day. We arrive early enough for you to settle in, enjoy the low light on the rocks and then watch the final glow without any rush. Once the sun has gone, darkness comes fast.
In the months of the south east trade winds the sky is often clear and the evening air pleasantly mild. As the Seychelles lie outside the cyclone belt, strong storms are rare all year round, so you can enjoy a sunset on Mahé in every season.
The best places to watch the sunset on Mahé
The west coast is the classic sunset side of the island. Which spot is best depends on where you stay and on the mood you are looking for.
Beau Vallon
The well known bay in the north west is lively in the evening. From here you often see the sun set close to the outline of Silhouette Island, framed by dark granite rocks. Beach bars and restaurants are close by for a sundowner.
Sunset Beach
Small and much quieter. If you prefer a calm, intimate atmosphere, this little beach in the north is a lovely choice.
Port Launay
One of the most beautiful bays of Mahé, in the north west. Its wide beach makes a wonderful setting for the last light of the day.
Anse Soleil, Anse à la Mouche and Baie Lazare
If you stay in the south west, these bays are ideal. Baie Lazare is named after the French explorer Lazare Picault, who landed on the west coast of Mahé in 1742.
Anse Intendance
Wild and spectacular in the south, with white sand and dramatic granite boulders. A beautiful place for photos at dusk.
Depending on the season and the weather, your guide may suggest another spot if the light promises to be better there that evening.
An evening for couples and special occasions
The end of the day changes the coast. Swimmers head home, fishermen come back, and a calm settles over the bays. You can dip your feet into the still warm water, sit in the sand or simply walk in silence. It is a slow moment, with no busy programme.
That is why a sunset evening is so popular with couples, for honeymoons and wedding anniversaries. Planning a special surprise? Let us know in advance and we will adapt the evening for you.
Sunset photography tips
Your guide knows the angles that show the granite silhouettes against the orange sky and the exact moment when the sun touches the sea. Bring a camera that handles strong contrasts, arrive early for the soft side light and stay a few minutes after sunset, when the sky often shows its deepest colours.
Plan your sunset on Mahé with us
Because all our tours are private, we can build your day around the evening light. We can end your Beach Tour or Mahé Island Tour at a sunset beach close to your hotel, or plan a tailor made evening trip with pick up in the late afternoon and return after dark. Drinks at a beach bar are optional and paid on site. Would you like more time? You can simply add extra hours when you book, and if the day runs a little longer, that is no problem.
We are a Seychellois family business on Mahé since 2020. We pick you up free of charge anywhere on Mahé and bring you back safely, and our guides speak English and French, and Sheena also speaks a bit of German.
What to bring
- Light clothes and a light sweater, shawl or windbreaker for the evening breeze
- Comfortable shoes if you want to walk on the beach or the rocks
- A camera or phone for photos
- A small headlamp or torch, as it gets dark quickly after sunset
Tell us your date, your pick up point and the occasion, whether it is simply the wish for beauty, a romantic evening or a gift. We then time everything to the minute so the magic can happen.
