Victoria is one of the smallest capitals in the world, and that is no disadvantage: what is spread across a city elsewhere stands together here within a few hundred metres. A colourful Hindu temple, two cathedrals, colonial buildings, monuments of a young nation and right in the middle a market that is not a museum but the place where the island shops.
The market
Fishermen sell the day's catch, next to it fruit, vegetables, cinnamon, vanilla and chillies. There is most going on in the morning, in the late afternoon things are packed away. Closed on Sundays. If you want to take something home: vanilla and spices travel well, fish does not.
The Botanical Garden
Ten minutes from the centre: giant tortoises, Coco de Mer and shade. Entry costs 250 rupees and is not included in the tour price.
How much time you need
On the island tour we drive through Victoria and stop one to three times for photos; a market visit takes extra time. If you really want to see the city, take our city tour: two to three hours on foot, with someone who knows the stories. It does not take place on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays.
Nearby
Eden Island is ten minutes to the east, Mont Signal with its view over the city is the same distance, and the Sans Souci Road up to Mission Lodge begins at the edge of the city.
