The Takamaka Rum Distillery is located in La Plaine St André near Au Cap on the east coast, in a plantation house dating from 1792, the oldest preserved house of its kind on Mahé. Rum here is not decoration for tourists, but something that is produced daily and sold from the island.
The Tour
It lasts about half an hour and takes you through production and storage: sugar cane, fermentation, stills, barrels. You smell each stage, and that is the part you cannot get from a book. After that comes the tasting: the white, the dark, the one with coconut, the one from the barrel.
Prices and Times
The tour costs 50 rupees, the full tasting 150 rupees, paid in cash on site and not included in the tour price. Tours are conducted on weekdays; on weekends the garden, shop and restaurant are open, but production is not running. If the tour is important to you, we will schedule it for a weekday.
Garden and Restaurant
You can sit under the old trees in the garden, and the restaurant in the house serves Creole food. If you just want to look around, half an hour is enough; if you eat, you will stay for an hour or longer. Both options are available in the daily itinerary.
Taking Something Home
The shop has all varieties, including ones that are not exported. Note the duty free allowances for alcohol in your home country and remember that bottles belong in checked luggage.
How to Get There
On the east coast road between Victoria and Anse Royale, easily reached by bus. The distillery is a fixed stop on our island tour.
Nearby
